Guide to clasps

These are a type of jewellery findings, they can be used to hold pendants and to join up necklaces, bracelets, anklets etc...

Below are an explanation of the different types of clasps available for jewellery making.

Also known as screw-lock, torpedo clasps

Is made up of two parts that can be screwed together. They are used to thread together chains, wires or strings. They are not always appropriate for bracelets as they are difficult to unscrew with one hand.

Screw-clasps

These are similar to barrel clasps but are made to look like a bead.

Hook clasp

Also known as Hook and eye clasps

These clasps comes in a variety of different designs and styles.
It is made up of a hook (sometimes two hooks) which links into a ring.
These clasps can be used for necklaces or chain belts.

Adjustable Clasps

These are a type of hook clasps. It consists of a hook and a chain.
Typically used in making necklaces. The necklace is attached to the ring on the chain, and the hook can be hooked onto any of the links in the chain, this allows the wearer to vary the length of the necklace.

S-hook clasps

These are S shaped clasps. The clasps are double ended. Applying pressure to the arm of the S closes the clasp. To open the claps pull the arm of the S.

Also known as carabiner clasps, lobster clasps, parrot clasps, trigger clasps

These are spring-loaded clasps, the clasp is a closed hook that opens when you press a small lever and closes when you release the lever.
A variety of uses including linking together chains and holding pendants.

Swivel clasps

These are a form of lobster claw clasps. The base of the clasp is a swivel that allows the clasp to be twisted around.
They are great for anklets and bracelets.

Magnetic clasps uses two magnets. The magnets hold the two components of the clasp together, the clasp is opened by simply pulling apart the two magnets apart.

Also known as Bar and ring toggle clasps, toggle clasps

These are two piece clasps. One piece is a loop, usually a ring but can be other shapes e.g. heart shape, stars, triangles etc... The second piece is a bar, the bar is longer than the diameter of the loop. When the bar is passed through the loop, it closes the clasp.

Both the loop and bar have small rings to allow the attachment of threads, chains and other jewellery components.

Multi-strand Clasps

These clasps are used to secure multiple strands of strings, chains, cords or wires.

Slide Lock Clasps

These are a type of multi-strand clasp.

The clasp consists of two components, a slide and a tube. You push the tube into the slide lengthwise. There is a spring mechanism that prevents the tube from slipping out.

The Slide lock clasp can vary in size and the number of loops it contains.

These clasps are used to clasp together many strands of strings, chains, cords or wires.

Bead clasps

These are designed to look like a bead. They are used so that the clasp does not disturb artistic design of the jewellery piece.
The clasp can be closed using a variety of methods that includes magnets and tab.

Box clasps

Also known as tab clasps, pearl clasps

Box clasps are two-piece clasps, consisting of a wedge and a box (sometimes the box is a frame). By pushing the wedge into the box closes clasp, there is a clipping mechanism that holds the wedge in place. Typically, by pressing on the side allows you to slide the wedge out, which opens the clasp.

Box clasps do not have as much strength as other clasps such as lobster claw clasps. So they are more suitable for lightweight bracelets, necklaces, and anklets.

Fishhook Clasps

These clasps consists of two pieces. One piece is a box, the second piece is a fishhook. The fishhook hooks to the inside of the box. Suitable for lightweight necklaces, bracelets and anklets.

These clasps consists of two pieces. One piece is the metallic lace, the other piece is either a wedge or a hook. Depending on the type of filigree clasps, the method of closure can be like a box clasp or a fishhook clasp.

Snap lock

Also known as fold-over clasps

This is a two piece clasp. The clasp closes by one piece folding shut on the other piece.

Also known as spring ring

Circular shaped clasp, with a spring mechanism for opening the clasp.
The clasp is opened by pulling on the lever, when the lever is released the clasp is closed by the spring mechanism.
